In October 2024, the iRTG-ParSciTech of CRC 1411 hosted its inaugural Summer School at the Fraunhofer Forschungscampus in Waischenfeld, situated in the picturesque Fränkische Schweiz an hour away from Erlangen. Held from October 14 to 17, the event brought the CRC doctoral researchers together for the purpose of exploring the fundamentals of designing particulate products. With over 27 participants, the Summer School featured lectures and workshops led by specialists in various fields. Topics included “Chemical-Physics: Fundamentals of Nanomaterials” led by Dr. Carlos Bassani (Project D04), “Advanced Porous Materials – Preparation Principles and Functionalization” by Dr. Florian Wisser (Project A04), “Nanoparticle Precipitation: From Modelling to MATLAB Implementation” by Dr. Lukas Pflug (Project D03), and “From Nanoparticles to Paint: The Science and Technology of Pigments” by Prof. Dr. Robin Klupp Taylor (Project A03). Participants also attended the seminars “3 Unknown Secrets to Setting Healthy Boundaries” led by Dr. Iris Wangermann and “Scientific Data Management” by Dr. Bich Ngoc Vu (Project INF), covering professional development and research best practices.

Beyond academic engagement, the Summer School fostered networking and collaboration through social activities. A guided hike to Sophie’s Cave offered a chance to appreciate the autumnal beauty of the Fränkische Schweiz, while shared discussions during breaks and workshops encouraged the exchange of ideas. By combining technical learning with personal development and community-building activities, the Summer School provided a holistic platform for participants to advance their research and professional skills.
